If you’re doing a web search on the concept of fat transfer or natural fat transfer, you’ll find a lot of controversy. Why is that? Well, you’ll find places where they say it doesn’t work or where they say it’s not really natural and it doesn’t really do the job that it’s purported to do; or they’ll say it’s too difficult; or they’ll say it’s uncontrollable. Don’t listen to those people, and I’d like to tell you why. Like anything in life, it needs experienced persons, good surgeons who know how to handle the fat and to transfer the fat in a natural, healthy way. The process involves taking the fat in a very gentle manner. It involves washing and processing and treating the fat in a very gentle way, and finally, placing the fat in the same gentle process into a place where it’s accepted. If you do all three of those concepts, taking it carefully, washing and treating it carefully, and placing it in a smart manner, it’s a very predictable, very wonderful, and very powerful tool. I think that why some surgeons are negative on it is because it’s a difficult concept. It is more sculpting and three-dimensional than some parts of plastic surgery. An example: if I’m going to put an implant in someone for breast enlargement I can pick the implant and the size of the implant and place it, but I’m not making a lot of three dimensional sculptural decisions. The wonderful thing about fat transfer in the face and other parts of the body as well is that it gives us true sculptural powers to really create the look and the shape in a permanent, healthy way, and is one of the most valuable and powerful procedures in plastic surgery. It truly is the most important new concept in plastic surgery in the last decade. I’m Dr. Lawrence Koplin, and thank you for listening.
